Advantages and disadvantages of directional wheels

The advantages and disadvantages of directional wheels are as follows
Advantages
Directional wheels can help the robot to keep a straight line and steer, improve control ability, operate flexibly and have a relatively simple structure. In specific areas such as underwater operations, directional wheels can realize precise control of the direction and strength of the water flow, improving propulsion efficiency. Meanwhile, compared with propellers, they generate less noise, which makes them suitable for tasks that require concealment and quietness. In terms of box towing, directional wheels are strong, stable and reliable when towing on puddled ground due to their embeddedness in the box and large bearings.
Disadvantages
The relatively small contact area of the directional wheels makes them susceptible to the external environment, such as uneven ground or sticky soil, which can lead to unstable traveling and weak resistance to side winds and winds on steep slopes. In some cases, such as robots that rely excessively on directional wheel control, the traveling may be unstable due to external factors. In addition, directional wheels may be more likely to be entangled by objects such as seaweed and jellyfish during propulsion, leading to damage or failure of the propellers, and they consume more energy relative to propellers, which affects range time. In the case of uneven ground, directional wheels may cause furniture to get stuck easily and require manual lifting to move the furniture.
